Sardinia
It's a long time since we visited Sardinia, and I wait for reports for how it is now from friends about to visit.
When we were there it was still a little wild and less explored. The furthest stop on an Interrail trip. We slept rough on the beach and wild camped high on the cliffs. Can you still do that? I don't know.
But that was part of its magic. Getting sand in your crevices and not having a shower for three days, surrounded by wild beauty and few tourists.
My memories of where we went are faded. But I believe we took a train to the Italian coast and caught a boat across to Olbia.
From there we took a couple of trains to the west coast of the island. The train network was quite small then, but maybe now it has grown.
I think we went to Oristano then walked to a nearby beach where we slept by an old upturned boat. Torre Grande rings a bell. A local came to join our party which was fun for a while, but it turned out he was mainly interested in the ladies.
The next night we decided to head to somewhere a bit more private and found a spot up on the cliffs to camp. I can't identify the location.
With beautiful wilderness around us and a gorgeous sunset over the sea and a dead unidentified snake on the nearby road.
You weren't allowed to wild camp within 3 km's of the towns so we had hiked a fair bit to find somewhere more secluded.
With beautiful blue sea below us and small waves breaking on the rocks it was a special moment in the trip.
But after a few days of unwashed beauty it was time to head back to the train and our route took us to the baking heat of Rome, but that's another story.
